Your Home For the Holidays

The hallmark of a good home audio/visual system is how it simplifies your day to day routine. With the holidays around the corner, now is a great time to give your smart home a few of your mindless tasks, freeing you up to relax with friends and family. Click here to read our collection of favorite tips and tools to usher you and your house into the holiday spirit.

For the Host

  • Put holiday lights on a timer so you don’t have to remember to turn them on and off each day.

  • Install smart lighting that change colors on queue

  • Enable the Allrecipes skill on your Echo to access voice-guided, hands-free recipe instruction. You can even pick recipes based on your available ingredients, amount of time, or preferred cooking method.

  • Enable the Mr. Bartender app on your Echo and be guided step-by-step through a plethora of cocktail recipes.

  • Someone drop in unexpectedly? No worries. Get notified when guests arrive by broadcasting a chime to the party room using your Control4.

  • Lots of teenagers in and out? Place a trigger button on your liquor cabinet door. Set an alert so you are notified every time the liquor cabinet is opened.

  • Use your iPad to tell the refrigerator when you’re out of ice, so it can ramp up production.

  • Display family photos from the past year throughout the house on tv and computer screens.

  • Project pictures of Santa on your front window with AtmosFX Santa's Visit Digital Decoration

For the Kids

  • Enable the Echo holiday countdown skill. “Alexa, how many days until Thanksgiving?”

  • To receive a daily suggestion for a way to show kindness, enable the Christmas Kindness skill.

  • As an alternative to holiday movies, consider holiday audible books that can be played throughout the house on your audio system.

  • Consider vetting holiday movies on www.commonsensemedia.com to gauge their appropriateness for the whole family. Netflix now integrates with Common Sense Media and you can see ratings and age suggestions on most movies and shows.

  • If your kids can’t stay awake to watch the ball drop on New Year’s, consider throwing them an early New Year’s countdown party in your home theater. Each year Netflix offers several child friendly countdowns available for streaming.

For the Traveler

  • You probably know by know that everything from your Christmas lights to your exterior lights can be tied to a timer. But did you know about Control 4s Mockupancy feature? When Control4 is in the “Away” mode, your daily “digital” behaviors are replayed throughout the day to make the house appear occupied.

  • Are you away, but want to give a guest access to your home? Create temporary access codes for your guests, which they can punch into your home’s smart locks, notifying you of their arrival.
